Why Keywords are Key to Your Website's Success

If you aren’t super familiar with digital marketing, you may never have heard of “SEO” or “keywords”. Understanding these principles is vital for any business owner. Proper application of SEO can boost your business's notoriety and increase your profits. Keywords are one of the key ingredients of SEO.


What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is just a fancy term for setting up your website so that it will be more likely to sit at the top of the search results page when someone searches on Google or Bing.


Obviously, that is a good setup to have, but how do you do it? There are many different strategies, and they are constantly evolving. Search engines want to list websites that are genuinely the best results for a search query. As such, the algorithms that search engines use are constantly evolving to weed out those that are trying to game the system.


So what does this have to do with keywords being key to your website's success? Keywords are the fundamental elements of SEO. Keywords are to SEO what dribbling is to basketball. No matter what your SEO strategy is, you will need to be able to employ keywords effectively.


What are Keywords?

Keywords are single words or phrases that help define your website's relevance to a search engine query. This can be better understood through an example. This will be an oversimplified example, but it should help you get the basic idea.


Suppose your drains get clogged and your kitchen sink is overflowing. You then google “clogged kitchen sink” to see if you can fix it yourself or get an expert. Google doesn’t know exactly what you want. So, what google does is take your phrase and match it to related words and phrases such as drain, clogged sink, plumber, drain repair, etc. It then looks for sites that frequently mention these terms the most and ranks them accordingly on your search results page.


So how do you use this to your advantage? Think of who your customer base is. What might they type into a search engine when looking for your services or products? Take these words and phrases and try to include them in your website's content. However, a word of caution. Don’t try to game the system. Search engines have ways to detect if keywords are showing up unnaturally on your website. Don’t try to put in a page with a long list of keywords. Instead, include them naturally through product descriptions, blog posts, and other web content.
