SEO marketing doesn’t mean much if you have yet to produce content for your business website. One of the best ways to bring traffic to your business website is to create a business blog. A business blog allows you to not only increase your SEO ranking, but it provides a way for you to reach out to customers and demonstrate your field expertise.

It can feel a bit intimidating to start up a blog, but it isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Just like anything in business, if you take the time to build a good foundation through preparation and a little research, you will find success. Here is how to get started on a successful, business blog today.

Find Your Niche

A business blog should be relevant to your field of business. If you are not quite sure what your business niche includes, you will want to start doing a bit of researching and thinking. To find your niche, start by considering your target audience. What type of person is most likely purchase your goods or services? What audience do you want to reach out to? Second, after you have discovered your intended audience, make sure to get to know them on a deeper level. Depending on the demographic you intend to service, you will want to frame your blog in a certain way. For example, if you are trying to reach out to a young audience, you may want to choose more modern graphics and popular themes that are suited for their stage of life.

Third, ensure that your blog will adequately meet the needs of your target population. For example, if your target audience includes young families, you will want to choose blog topics that would be of interest to families—not retired or single persons. Just keep in mind that your blog is an appendage to your marketing strategy; therefore, any question that you may ask yourself before starting a business or paying for online ads should also be considered before starting your blog.

Choose a Blog Template

For many, the most intimidating part of starting a business blog is the designing of one. Fortunately for business owners, there are plenty of online platforms and software to help you create your blog. Depending on how much skill you have in graphic design and coding, certain platforms will give you more or less freedom in how you want your blog to look. While there are rarely right or wrong answers when it comes to blog design, here are a couple ‘rules of thumb’ you should take into consideration:

First, make sure that you keep your blog design simple with contrasting colors that fit well together. Nothing is more distracting that a crowded or cluttered blog where it is difficult to find information. Embrace simplicity and white space! Second, be sure to be genuine to yourself, your story, and your business model. For example, if you are serving a professional audience, it may not be the best to use excessive amounts of emojis or funky fonts. Third, make sure that your blog template is mobile friendly so that mobile users can have just as good of an experience visiting your blog as desktop users.

Create a Content Schedule

After you have narrowed down your niche and developed your blog’s design, now it is time for you to create a plan for the content you will be posting. Keep in mind that it is critical that you post fairly frequently and consistently if you really want to get your potential customers to notice you. Therefore, it is generally a good idea to create a content schedule where you plan to post a new blog article at least once every week.

As you create a content schedule for your blog, research popular keywords for your industry. These keywords will guide you in planning your content and increasing your website’s SEO ranking. Furthermore, researching and incorporating quality keywords will increase your ability to reach out to your target audience and make your mark on the first page of customers’ online search results.

Blogging is an important aspect of SEO. The more content you produce, the more you will be seen by potential customers. If you haven’t started a business blog, there is never a better day than today to create one! Just make sure that you discover and research your niche, keep your blog design simple and trendy, and create a content schedule that will prepare you to post frequently and consistently.
