How Can I Better Learn and Execute SEO?

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Unfortunately, there is no ‘instruction manual’ on how to do SEO perfectly. It varies depending on the needs of your brand. Improving your SEO is not a step-by-step-and-you-are-done process either—it is sort of like the process to becoming a millionaire or an award-winning musician. Everyone knows that there is no one way to reach millionaire or award-winning status. Well, there is no one way of getting your website on the first page of Google either. Improving your SEO takes time and effort. It is an individualized process. However, here are some basic principles to help you boost your website’s SEO.

Practice

No one has ever accomplished anything meaningful without practice. While it is essential to gain as much knowledge as you can on SEO, no amount of research can replace applying one’s knowledge to the real world. In other words, don’t wait to start experimenting with your own website. Take the time to practice executing SEO with a website of your own. There are so many low-cost or free ways to practice. Start your own free blog or website or develop a presence on YouTube by posting original videos. The options are endless.

In the end, recognize that it will take a lot of trial and error on your part. For justifiable reasons, not a lot of people post online free, quality information about SEO because, well, they are trying to boost their SEO too. And who likes to help their competitors--especially for free? So, either you can pay a lot of money for a video course or book on SEO, or you can learn on your own.

On-Page vs. Off-Page

It is important to recognize the difference between on-page SEO and off-page SEO, as you will need to learn how to manage both types in order to get the ‘first page on Google’ status you’ve been working towards. On-page SEO has to do with the actual content of your website, blog, or other online content. On-page SEO helps determine what your website is ranked for, but not how high it is ranked. Off-page SEO looks at your site’s popularity and helps determine how high your website is ranked.

To improve your on-page SEO, you will need to look at the actual content of your website or other online platform. How does your web design look? Is your site appealing and attractive? Do you have enough content? Do you consistently post new content? Do you have a sufficient number of internal links and do you take advantage of keywords and site speed optimization? These are only a few things to look at to improve your on-page SEO.

To improve your off-page SEO, link building will be your best friend. The most popular link building technique is backlinking, a strategy aimed to generate links on other site’s that connect to your website. While there is a lot to know about link building, some important principles include:

1. Make sure that your links are posted on trustworthy sites

2. Make sure that your links relate well to the linking site’s subject matter as well as your own subject matter

3. Ensure that the links to your site are fresh and applicable

4. Continuously engage in link building so that you have numerous links that lead back to your site

Learn What You Can

While there is no single roadmap to improving your website’s SEO, that does not mean that you cannot at least learn useful principles and practices from others. Yes, it can sometimes be difficult to find valuable information for free online, but the more you soak up information from reputable sources, the better. Don’t feel ashamed to ask friends, family, or professional connections for their advice. And don’t forget to keep practicing the things that you learn. True learning involves application.

In summary, there is no need to feel intimidated or overwhelmed in doing SEO. Yes, there is a lot to learn from personal research and practice but feel confident that you are doing the best you can right now by reading into SEO and applying it to your own website. If you follow the tactics and principles listed above, there is no doubt that you will see progress.
